The Gold Coast hinterland spans the McPherson Range and Tweed Valley on either side of the NSW–Queensland border. Within 60–90 minutes of the Gold Coast CBD, the landscape shifts from beachside development to rainforest, cattle country, and country villages that have barely changed in decades. This guide covers the best of it.
The hinterland's three distinct zones
The Queensland side of the hinterland (Tamborine Mountain, Lamington, the Scenic Rim) tends to be more developed and visitor-oriented. The NSW side (Tweed Valley, Border Ranges, Northern Rivers) is wilder, less commercial, and — many would argue — more rewarding. The best hinterland weekends combine both.
Saturday: Lamington National Park and O'Reilly's
Lamington National Park is one of the largest reserves of subtropical rainforest in Australia and part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area. O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat sits at 900 metres elevation in the heart of the park, with the famous treetop walk, wild king parrots feeding from your hand, and walking tracks into temperate and subtropical rainforest. Allow half a day minimum.
Saturday afternoon: Tamborine Mountain
Tamborine Mountain sits above the Gold Coast and on a clear day offers views from Byron Bay to Brisbane. Gallery Walk (the main commercial strip) has an above-average concentration of genuinely good food and produce — particularly wine, cheese, and craft distilleries. Mount Tamborine Winery and Thunderbird Distillery are worth stops.
Sunday: Cross the border into the Tweed Valley
Drive south across the border into the Tweed Valley via the Tweed Valley Way. The landscape immediately changes — volcanic basalt soil, banana and avocado country, working cattle farms. Stop in Murwillumbah for breakfast or coffee (try Café Piccolo). Continue to Tyalgum village (population ~500) for a beer at the historic Tyalgum Hotel.
Where to stay: Highfield Farm, Back Creek
Highfield Farm at 345 Back Creek Road, Back Creek NSW (60km from Gold Coast Airport) is the standout accommodation option for hinterland weekends with groups. The 550-acre working cattle property sleeps up to 28 guests across two houses on exclusive use, with a pool, heated spa, motocross track, billiard room, and views to Mt Warning. For smaller groups or couples, the Tyalgum Hotel and several guesthouses in Uki provide more intimate options.
Getting there: the routes that make the drive worthwhile
- •From Brisbane: M1 south to Tweed Heads (1.5 hours), then inland via Murwillumbah
- •From Gold Coast: direct via Mudgeeraba and the Numinbah Valley Road through the border rainforest (spectacular)
- •From Ballina/Byron: Coolamon Scenic Drive through Bangalow and Federal — one of NSW's best drives
